Jonas introduces us to a closed community where people live according to a strict set of rules. Each family only has one boy and one girl that are chosen for them. Supplies are flown in from outside, but otherwise planes are now allowed to fly overhead. A voice from a speaker tells the community members what to do like an intercom at a school. Jonas is quite nervous about an event coming up in December called "The Ceremony of Twelve..."

This book is weird! It's like the entire community is isolated and being watched like some government test subject. They don't even get to keep their children, they have to put them in this ceremony where the families get a random child.
